Why mixing Clorox and Ammonia are dangerous

I cannot recommend using Clorox (bleach) and ammonia together. Mixing these two chemicals creates a dangerous gas called chloramine. Chloramine is toxic and can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Inhaling high concentrations of chloramine can cause serious health problems, including fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema) which can be fatal.

Here's a breakdown of when it's appropriate to use each product:

  • Clorox (Bleach):
    • Suitable for disinfecting non-porous surfaces like toilets, sinks, countertops, and cutting boards.
    • Effective against bacteria, viruses, and some fungi.
    • Always dilute bleach according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Never mix bleach with other cleaning products.
  • Ammonia:
    • Effective for cleaning grease, grime, and oil.
    • Can be used on glass, porcelain, and stainless-steel surfaces.
    • Always wear gloves and ensure proper ventilation when using ammonia.

Here are some safer alternatives for disinfection and cleaning:

  • Disinfecting surfaces:
    • Alcohol-based solutions (at least 70% alcohol)
    • Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats)
  • Cleaning greasy messes:
    • Baking soda and vinegar paste
    • Dish soap and water
  • Cleaning glass and windows:
    • White vinegar and water solution
    • Commercial glass cleaner

Safety first! It's important to choose the right cleaning product for the job and always follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe use and dilution. If you're unsure about a particular cleaning task, it's best to consult a professional cleaning service.
